Dwight received his B.A. magna cum laude from Yale College in 1977, where he majored in history and rowed in the men’s lightweight program, earning a varsity letter in 1977. 

Dwight received his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1981, where he was an Articles & Book Review Editor of the Yale Law Journal.

After graduating from law school, Dwight clerked for Judge Hugh H. Bownes on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.

Dwight has been married for over 35 years to Mindy Kotler, director of the D.C.-based think tank Asia Policy Point. They have two adult children, Dewey and Cornelia. Dwight currently serves as an elder at Georgetown Presbyterian Church and rows at the Potomac Boat Club.
